TULSA, OK — The Muscogee Nation Department of Health (MCN Health) hosted its 19th Annual Diabetes Awareness Summit today, highlighting major advances in care and announcing new initiatives to combat one of the most pressing health issues in Native communities.

Secretary of Health Shawn Terry unveiled a new partnership with Nephrology Specialists of Oklahoma, with nephrology services set to launch at Council Oak Comprehensive Healthcare within the next two months. He also announced the partnership with OU Health for a Vascularization and Limb Salvage Clinic as part of the Zero Amputations by 2026 campaign, addressing the fact that Native Americans face amputation rates ten times higher than any other race.

MCN Health reported unprecedented progress in diabetes care: over 2,000 patients now use continuous glucose monitors, 4,000 are receiving GLP-1 therapy, and 80% of patients have an A1c under 8%. Obesity rates among patients have dropped from 70% a decade ago to 58% today.

The Summit also featured keynote speaker Dr. Catherine Gaffney, Medical Director for the Kirk Center for Bariatrics at Bailey Medical Center, who discussed the complexity of obesity, its role in diabetes, and evidence-based strategies for prevention and treatment. Attendees also participated in breakout sessions, health screenings, and cultural wellness presentations, underscoring the holistic approach MCN Health is taking to fight diabetes.

“As we look ahead to our 20th Annual Summit, we celebrate the historic progress made and commit to building on this work for the health of our people,” Terry said.
