MCN Health Launches Limb Salvage Program with Focus on Preventing Amputations
New multidisciplinary program brings specialists together with a shared focus on limb preservation
OKMULGEE, OK — Muscogee Nation Department of Health is launching a new Limb Salvage Program, bringing together a multidisciplinary team of specialists to identify patients at risk for limb loss, intervene earlier and provide coordinated care with a shared mission: Zero Amputations.
The Limb Salvage Program brings together expertise across vascular care, wound care, podiatry, and diabetes management to address the complex conditions that can put a patient’s limb at risk.
For patients with diabetes, peripheral artery disease, non-healing wounds and other conditions, preventing limb loss can require more than treatment from a single specialty. MCN Health’s multidisciplinary approach is designed to improve coordination between providers and ensure patients have access to the appropriate care and interventions as early as possible.
The team is led by Gershon Koshy, D.O., an interventional cardiologist and vascular specialist who provides cardiovascular care to MCN Health patients at Council Oak.“Our goal is to preserve limbs, protect mobility and keep our people healthy and independent,” Dr. Koshy said. “A multidisciplinary approach gives us the opportunity to intervene earlier and improve outcomes for our patients.”
Through the program, specialists can work collaboratively to address issues such as poor circulation, non-healing wounds, and management of underlying chronic conditions. This coordinated approach allows the care team to develop a treatment plan centered around each patient’s individual needs.
Early identification is a critical component of limb preservation. Patients, particularly those living with diabetes or vascular disease, are encouraged to pay attention to wounds that are slow to heal, changes in skin color or temperature, numbness or tingling, swelling, and pain in the legs or feet when walking.
The Limb Salvage Program is part of MCN Health’s continued investment in expanding specialty care and improving health outcomes for the people and communities it serves.
Zero Amputations will also serve as the focus of an ongoing MCN Health awareness campaign highlighting limb-loss prevention, early intervention and the multidisciplinary team working together to preserve limbs and improve quality of life.
